Hosted by the Northern Ireland Group for Art as Therapy (NIGAT) and
the School of Education, Queen’s University Belfast - in association with SIPE.

Belfast City Hall: 2006 is the centenary of its opening At the XVII SIPE International Congress in Athens (October 2003), Caryl Sibbett, Eileen McCourt and Ruth Leitch  represented the Northern Ireland Group for Art as Therapy (NIGAT) and the School of Education, Queen’s University Belfast, and were successful in their bid to host the next SIPE International Congress in Belfast in 2006!

This was especially gratifying because 2006 was NIGAT’s 30th anniversary!

We thank all those who attended this Congress. The Congress was attended by:
- arts therapists, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychiatrists, healthcare practitioners, artists, teachers, allied health professionals, probation officers, social workers, and other related professions.

It was organised by several members of NIGAT and the School of Education, Queen’s University Belfast, in association with SIPE.

SIPE is an international pluri- and interdisciplinary Society and its aims "are to establish and maintain links between the various specialists interested in the relationships between expression, creation and art and current national and international research in the field of psychiatry and art therapy, psychoanalysis, psychology and sociology." SIPE holds an international Congress every three years.

The Congress began with a Welcome Reception and entertainment on the evening of Wednesday 6th September and continued with two and a half days of keynote presentations; parallel papers, panels and workshops; posters and social opportunities. A Gala Dinner was held on the Friday evening in the Europa Hotel (attendance optional). The Congress closed after lunchtime on Saturday 9th September 2006.

    Red button ABSTRACTS

The deadline for receiving abstracts was 30th April 2006. We aimed to be as inclusive as possible of any abstract received after the deadline. Abstracts were for papers, workshops, performances and posters.

Guidance on creating a poster can be accessed online at: Creating a Poster.

Abstracts for papers and workshops were expected to be in accordance with the main theme which was:
    'Creative Transformation'

    and sub-themes which were:
    mental health; social inclusion; trauma; conflict resolution; mediation; reparation;
multi-cultural approaches; critical and transformative methodologies.

In the spirit of SIPE, papers and workshops were in relation to professions including:
Arts Therapies. Psychiatry. Medicine. Psychotherapy. Psychoanalysis. Education. Research.
Sociology. Psychology. Philosophy. Anthropology. Aesthetics. Art. Sport.

The rationale for the Congress being held in Northern Ireland and for the themes included: "Northern Ireland is undergoing a regeneration as it emerges from a prolonged period of conflict. After thirty years of the 'Troubles' the peace process has been developing since 1998. The vacuum after 'war' has created opportunities to replace the previous disorder with creative and inclusive processes. Northern Ireland is thus engaged in a process of promoting a multi-cultural ethos where people can embrace multiple cultural identities. The arts therapies and other therapeutic professions have played a valuable part in healing splits and in Northern Ireland’s process of transformation." (excerpt from Congress bid in Athens).
