    NIGAT has a NEW WEBSITE: go to: NIGAT new website.

    The information in this old website is historical as of 2008 and so may be out of date. It is preserved here for historical purposes.

    NIGAT, formed in 1976, is a Registered Charity and one of its aims is to benefit the public. It provides a unique forum for persons:

    NIGAT's Chairperson (2009) is Frank Holmes. NIGAT became a Charity in 1989 [Inland Revenue Charity Ref No. XR36993].  It is a membership organisation which is administered by a voluntary Committee, elected annually at the AGM from within the membership group.  Office bearers are elected from within the Committee group.  Due to its voluntary nature NIGAT has no office or premises, but can be contacted through the NIGAT Secretary by emailing: info@nigat.org and postal contact via: NIGAT Secretary, c/o Centre for Psychotherapy, Shimna House, Knockbracken Healthcare Park, Saintfield Road, Belfast BT8 8BH.

    The focus of the Group is art as therapy and the Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy profession, and it also actively encourages networking with other arts therapies, such as Music Therapy, Dramatherapy, and Dance and Movement therapy.  The working contexts of NIGAT members include: Art Therapists; Art Psychotherapists; counsellors; teachers; artists; Music Therapists; Dramatherapists; social workers; nurses; aromatherapists; care workers in voluntary and statutory agencies; art students etc.

    For details on professional Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy services provided by HPC Registered Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists - see Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy Service below for details.

    An important part of the work of the Group is to increase the awareness of the value of the therapeutic art approach. Therefore, NIGAT conducts workshops, training and information courses, seminars etc.. Some of these events are held in conjunction with Queen's University Belfast and the University of Ulster. See Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy Training below for details.

    The founding of the Group was inspired by Rita Simon, Art Therapist, who was President of NIGAT. Sadly, Rita Simon died in 2008 and we mourn her loss with great sorrow and also celebrate her life and the inspiration she gave to us and to so many.

    Rita was also a founding member of the British Association of Art Therapists and she was Honorary President of BAAT. Rita Simon published three books on art therapy - see Reading List5, 6 below for details. The Rita Simon Collection is a collection of artwork (made between 1942-1984) deriving from Rita Simon's 55 years of work as an art therapist in private practice, hospitals and day centres of the National Health Service and Social Services. The collection is housed in the Wellcome Trust's History of Medicine Library - Iconographic Collections.

    NIGAT Mission Statement:   "We use the creative art process to facilitate personal well-being".   [NIGAT is pronounced 'nigh-gat'.]

    Please note: NIGAT has received requests for placements and work experience from people visiting this site. Unfortunately NIGAT regrets that it cannot arrange any such work of either kind.

    The XVIII SIPE International Congress was held in Belfast in 2006, hosted by the School of Education, Queen's University Belfast and NIGAT.  We were honoured to attract such an important event to Northern Ireland. This was especially gratifying because it also enabled us to celebrate NIGAT's 30th anniversary (2006)! The Congress, held in the Europa Hotel Belfast, attracted a rich range of papers, workshops, performances and posters. Delegates came from over 20 countries. • The first UK "Arts-Based Educational Research": International Conference. 23rd-25th June 2005.
    Hosted by the Graduate School of Education, Queen's University Belfast, in collaboration with the Universities of Bristol and Sheffield. This international conference brought together a range of interested professionals, practitioners and researchers who increasingly use the arts to enhance, transform and capture people's meanings and who are interested in advancing the arts in educational and social research.
    Keynote speakers included: Elliot Eisner, Andrew Sparkes, Alison Dye, Carl Bagley & Peter Clough.
    • Meeting: 20th January 2005, 7.00-9.00pm. A meeting was held to enable members of NIGAT and the new BAAT Regional Group 20 (Northern Ireland) to discuss the future roles for both organisations. All members of either/both groups were welcome to attend. It was decided that both organisations would continue to work collaboratively.
    • 'Signatures Withheld' Exhibition: 29th November - 17th December 2004:
    From 29th November to 17th December 2004 NIGAT held a fundraising exhibition entitled 'Signatures Withheld' at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. The purpose of the exhibition was to raise funds for NIGAT and also to raise awareness of the practice of Art Therapy in Northern Ireland.
    The opening night was well attended and was a tremendous occasion and we were delighted that over 100 artworks sold on this first evening. The idea behind the 'Signatures Withheld' exhibition was that artists did not sign their name on the front of work, so each piece was exhibited anonymously, to be sold at (a minimum of) £30 per artwork, all proceeds going to NIGAT. The identity of the artist was only revealed when the purchased artwork was collected. Submitted artworks were in any medium and of any subject matter. Work was submitted unmounted and unframed on an A5 piece of card or paper, and signed on the back. NIGAT mounted each piece.
    Entries were from a diverse and wide range of artists including some well-known artists and public figures across Northern Ireland. NIGAT extends its sincere thanks to all those who did such wonderful work to organise this exhibition, particularly to Alice McCullough.
    • An evening meal for NIGAT members followed the February 2004 Day Meeting (07/02/04).
    • NIGAT Christmas Dinner, 2002:
    • 25th Silver Anniversary Exhibition, 2001:
    NIGAT held a special 25th Anniversary Exhibition to celebrate its history and development since its inception in 1976. The dates were 31/07-03/08/01 (to fall within the 9th Summer School) and the venue was the Linenhall Library, Belfast. NIGAT thanks all those who donated or lent documents and photos etc for the Exhibition.
    • Art Therapy Conference, 2000:
    NIGAT held the first Art Therapy Conference in Northern Ireland, and indeed in Ireland, entitled Costing Creativity on Thursday 28th September 2000. This proved to be very successful.   For further details of this 2000 conference, go to the link: Art Therapy Conference.

    Red button 5.   THE ART THERAPY / ART PSYCHOTHERAPY PROFESSION

    Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists are professionals who have undertaken appropriate postgraduate training and been approved for HPC Registration by the Health Professions Council (HPC).

    The Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy profession is protected by law and therefore has legally protected titles. Therefore the terms "Art Therapist" and "Art Psychotherapist" are among those legally protected.

    OFFENCES
    The Health Professions Council states:
      "Misuse of titles" - "A person commits an offence if they use a protected title if they are not registered with us*. It is also an offence to intend to deceive by implying that you are a member of one of the professions that we regulate. An example of this is if someone states that they provide chiropody services when they are not on our register."

    Under The Health Professions Order 2001 (Statutory Instrument 2002 No. 254), a person commits a criminal offence under circumstances including the following:
      "39. - (1)" "...a person commits an offence if with intent to deceive (whether expressly or by implication) -
    • (a) he falsely represents himself to be registered in the register, or a particular part of it or to be the subject of any entry in the register;
    • (b) he uses a title referred to in article 6(2) to which he is not entitled;
    • (c) he falsely represents himself to possess qualifications in a relevant profession. ..."

      "... (3) A person commits an offence if -
    • (a) with intent that any person shall be deceived (whether expressly or by implication) he causes or permits another person to make any representation about himself which, if made by himself with intent to deceive, would be an offence under paragraph (1); ..."

    Professional Codes of Ethics and Practice are provided by the Professional Body, the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).

    Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy is one of the Allied Health Professions (AHPs) and as such the profession is regulated by the Health Professions Council.   The Health Professions Council prepares and publishes a Register, approves the training courses for the profession and carries out disciplinary functions.   The HPC is an independent, UK-wide regulatory body responsible for setting and maintaining standards of professional training, performance and conduct of the numerous healthcare professions that it regulates. The HPC will also ensure that professional registration is linked to continual professional development.

    The HPC has published Standards of Proficiency which it notes "are the standards which every registrant must meet in order to become registered, and must continue to meet in order to maintain their registration". This document is available online at:
    Standards of Proficiency - Arts Therapists.

    Information relevant to Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists and other AHPs in Northern Ireland can be accessed via the Allied Health Professions (AHPs) online website. Other relevant UK information can be accessed at the Allied Health Professionals Bulletin website.

    HPC REGISTER: Confirming a person's HPC Registration:

    Persons and organisations wishing to avail of an art therapy service or employ an art therapist for any reason (i.e., therapy, supervision, training etc) should first ensure that the person is currently HPC Registered. To confirm a person's HPC Registration, please click here: HPC Online Register and follow the search procedure outlined. This link takes you to the HPC website.

    Definitions:

    The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) (2008: 2) 1 defines Art Therapy as "a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication."

    Waller and Gilroy (1992: 5) 7 note that, according to BAAT documentation relating to the HPC Registration of Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists, "art therapy" (and thus also Art Psychotherapy) is further defined as follows:-
    "Art therapy is a form of therapy in which the making of visual images (paintings, drawings, models, etc.) in the presence of a qualified art therapist contributes towards externalisation of thoughts and feelings which may otherwise remain unexpressed."

    In its on-line site, BAAT states that Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy is a psychological and psychotherapeutic treatment that utilises art materials and the processes involved in making art.

    In its website (now replaced by the HPC website), the Arts Therapists Board noted that
    "Under separate legislation, to work in the National Health Service or H.M. Prison Service, either directly or as a contractor, as an arts therapist, one must be registered."
    The HPC clarify that practitioners of Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy must be HPC Registered under the legally protected title of Art Therapist or Art Psychotherapist.

    History of HPC Registration

    Prior to 1st April 2002 approval for State Registration was by The Arts Therapists Board of the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine, London.   The CPSM was an independent, self-regulating, statutory body that offered State Registration to members of those health professions which were approved by Parliament as falling within the terms of the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act, 1960.

    With effect from 26th March 1997 the Council for the Professions Supplementary to Medicine (CPSM) Act of 1960 was extended to include Art Therapists, giving State Registration to the profession of Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy. This was achieved by Statutory Instrument 1997 No. 1121 [The Professions Supplementary to Medicine (Arts Therapists Board) Order of Council 1997].

    As from the 1st April 2002 the CPSM handed over its statutory responsibilities to the Health Professions Council. The HPC is the regulator for a range of Allied Health Professions and its purpose is to protect the public. The HPC regulates Art Therapy / Art Psychotherapy, registers Art Therapists and Art Psychotherapists and approves pre-registration training programmes. The HPC website asserts that "since the introduction of the new legislation (the Health Professions Order) in 2001, the term (State Registration / State Registered) is now redundant and should no longer be used."

Membership of this regional group is open to BAAT members who are Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists (i.e. HPC Registered) or students on the HPC approved MSc Art Therapy. It is hoped that this will offer opportunities for Northern Ireland BAAT members to avail of professional support, continuing professional development (CPD), peer supervision etc. The group has a regional co-ordinator who can be contacted via the NIGAT email address.

    It is intended that this regional group will meet 4 times per year. Attendance at meetings of the regional group will contribute to CPD requirements.

    7.   ART THERAPY / ART PSYCHOTHERAPY WORK

    Initiation and development of job opportunities for Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists returning from training is another major area of work for NIGAT.

    Art Therapists / Art Psychotherapists in Northern Ireland have worked / currently work in various contexts, including the following:-
    • Offenders and remand prisoners (e.g. HM Prisons. Prison Hospital. The Probation Board for N. I.);
    • Elderly care (e.g. Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast);
    • People affected by psychiatric illness (e.g. Psychotherapy Department, Belfast);
    • People affected by trauma (e.g. Tara Centre, Omagh);
    • Children (e.g. Musgrave Park Hospital. "Make Your Mark" in the North West of N. I.);
    • Children suffering cystic fibrosis (e.g. Royal Hospitals, Belfast);
    • Palliative care (e.g. Marie Curie Centre Beaconfield, Belfast);
    • People affected by cancer (e.g Ulster Cancer Foundation, Belfast; N. I. Cancer Fund for Children; Gerard Lynch Centre, Belvoir Park Hospital, Belfast);
    • Sessional art therapy in diverse organisational contexts;
    • In the community;
    • Private practice - some Art Therapists are in private practice. Referrals can be made via the NIGAT email address to the BAAT Regional Group 20 (Northern Ireland).

    Usually as a means of gaining initial experience prior to training, art as therapy workers assist in some of these areas and others, mostly on a voluntary basis.

    NB   NIGAT has received requests for placements and work experience from people visiting this site. Unfortunately NIGAT regrets that it cannot arrange any such work of either kind and this is due to various factors:
    1. the confidential & sensitive nature of art therapy sessions;
    2. the time taken for police/security clearance to engage in such work;
    3. NIGAT's work developing approved placements for students on the MSc Art Therapy course.
